Origin and history
The Hotel de Génis, located in Sarlat-la-Canéda, is a monument whose origins date back to the 15th century, as evidenced by architectural elements still visible today. The oldest part, adjacent to the Cliquet House, has a full hanger opening on the ground floor and a geminied window with columns on the first floor. These stylistic details, typical of the late Middle Ages, suggest an initial construction at this time. The building was originally larger, but part was later demolished, reducing its current right of way.
In the 17th century, the hotel underwent major changes, reflecting the evolution of tastes towards classicism. A porch decorated with flat pilasters and surmounted by a triangular pediment is added, while a balustrade is built on the old fence wall, replacing the demolished part. These transformations, characteristic of French classical architecture, mark a desire to beautify and adapt to the aesthetic norms of the time. All the facades, including the balustrade terrace wall and the lauze roof, are protected by a registration order in 1961, recognizing its heritage value.
The Hôtel de Génis thus illustrates the superimposition of two distinct architectural epochs: the late 15th century Gothic and the 17th century Classicism. Its porch, medieval openings and balustrade make it a remarkable example of the evolution of the urban structure in Sarlat, a city rich in medieval heritage and reborn. Today, there remains a testimony of the transformations experienced by private hotels between the Middle Ages and the modern era.
