Origin and history
The Hotel de Ginestous, also known as Hotel d'Hortoles, is a private hotel located in Montpellier, in the department of Hérault. This building, inscribed in historical monuments since 1944, illustrates the refined civil architecture of the eighteenth century. Its organisation around a central courtyard and monumental staircase make it a remarkable example of Montpellieran urban planning of the time.
The current structure rests on a quadrilateral with central courtyard, with a large staircase on the ground floor opening onto the courtyard in the form of a gate with free columns. The facade, composed of two floors on the ground floor, incorporates classical elements such as doric columns and triglyphs. However, the building hides a medieval origin, partially visible through remains of vaults preserved in some rooms.
The hotel was rebuilt in 1671 by the mason Jean Bonnassier for Philippe de Bornier, a lieutenant on the senate floor of Montpellier. This renovation almost entirely masked the original medieval building, whose existence is attested by residual architectural expertise and traces. The staircase, protected by a 1944 stop, is distinguished by its carved balusters and crawling arches, characteristic elements of its style.
Located at 15 rue des Trésoriers-de-la-Bourse, the hotel of Ginestous bears witness to the architectural evolution of Montpellier, between medieval heritage and classical transformations. Its designation as historic monuments underscores its heritage value, both for its history and for its aesthetic qualities.
