Origin and history

The Hôtel de Goudin, located in the Place de la Liberté in Sarlat-la-Canéda, is a historic monument built over the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The oldest part, dating from the 16th century, is on the courtyard side and includes a characteristic staircase turret. A rounded door provides access to the inner courtyard, while the second floor has openings framed by flat corinthian capital pilasters. Two canned pilasters also surround two other openings, and a intercuted pediment shield, decorated with a shell, completes the architectural ensemble.

The facade on the square and the staircase on the courtyard, as well as the roof, were protected by a registration order under the Historical Monuments on September 11, 1963. These elements reflect the refined civil architecture of the Renaissance and early modern times, typical of the private hotels in this region. The building, although partially modified in the 17th century, retains significant traces of its origin, as evidenced by the sculptural details and the structure of the turret.

Sarlat-la-Canéda, a medieval and reborn town, was an important economic and administrative centre in the Dordogne. Private hotels, such as Goudin's, illustrated the social status of their owners, often local notables, wealthy merchants or royal officers. These urban residences served both as a place of life and representation, marking the rise of an influential bourgeoisie in a region that was then dynamic through trade and agriculture.
