Origin and history

The Hotel de Griffy is an iconic mansion in Montpellier, built in the 18th century. It is distinguished by its quadrilateral composition around an inner courtyard, complemented by a back garden. Its courtyard façades, treated in free-column portico on the ground floor, reflect a refined architecture. The columns and pilasters are arranged with dice calculated to integrate a large staircase, whose bay opens freely on the courtyard.

The first construction of the hotel dates back to 1648, commissioned by Gilbert de Griffy and carried out by the masons Antoine Sartre and Antoine Limagne. A major overhaul took place around 1758 for Joseph François de Pavée, Marquis de Villevieille, after obtaining permission to drive. This reshaping marks the architectural evolution of the building, which now combines 17th-century classical elements with 18th-century influences.

Griffy Hotel has been listed as a historical monument since October 18, 1944. This protection specifically concerns its facades, porch, vestibule and staircase overlooking the inner courtyard. Located at 26 rue de l'Aiguillerie, it bears witness to the Montpellieran architectural heritage and the evolution of private hotels under the Old Regime.

Available sources, including Wikipedia and Monumentum, highlight its historical and architectural importance. The base Mérimée the reference under the code Insee 34172, confirming its anchoring in the department of the Hérault, in the Occitanie region. Its exact address and GPS location make it an accessible monument, although information about its visit or current use remains limited.
