Origin and history
The Grimaldi-Régusse hotel is a private hotel located in the heart of La Ciotat, 18 rue Adolphe-Abeille and 6 quai Ganteaume. Built in the first half of the seventeenth century, it bears witness to the urban expansion of the city at that time. The building, which has been listed as historic monuments since 19 January 1999, is distinguished by its refined architecture, combining classical and Baroque influences.
The hotel was originally built for a family of some of the most influential traders in the region. Its construction began around the 1630s, and then underwent major transformations some twenty years later, including the addition of a semicircular baroque staircase decorated with gypseries. Inside, the hotel retains remarkable decorative elements, such as two frontons, three French-style ceilings painted with rinceaux, and a frieze in one of the lounges.
The registration of the entire hotel (including its outbuildings, cadastre AB 182) by order of 19 January 1999 underlines its heritage importance. The building illustrates the prestige of the merchant families of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur in the 17th century, when La Ciotat established itself as a dynamic economic centre, thanks in particular to maritime commerce.
