Origin and history

The Hotel de Hausen, built in the 18th century in St. John's, Angély, is a mansion that became the headquarters of the Arthur Bonnet Association Museum in 1935, founded by the local Archaeology Society. The museum retained various collections: architectural remains, archaeological objects, fine arts, religious arts and popular traditions, as well as a numismatic and weapons collection. The building, which was listed as a historic monument in 1942 for its façade and roof, played a key role in the preservation of regional heritage before the creation of the Cordeliers Museum in 2003.

The Society of Archaeology of St. John's Angely, founded in 1923, had the mission of studying and safeguarding local monuments, while establishing a museum to house objects that could not remain in situ. In 1997, an agreement with the city led to the creation of the Musée des Cordeliers, located in the former hotel of the sub-prefects, while the Hôtel de Hausen retained some of the collections, including the Autochenille Croissant d'Argent, a historical monument, used during the Citroën expeditions to Africa and Asia (1922–32).

The Hôtel de Hausen also welcomed donations related to these expeditions, such as those of Louis Audouin-Dubreuil and Maurice Penaud, participants in the missions. These objects, together with works of art and ethnographic collections, have contributed to enriching the exposed heritage. Although the museum moved in 2003, the mansion remains an architectural and historical testimony to the cultural and scientific life of Saint-Jean-d.
