Origin and history
The Hotel de Joubert, also known as Hotel Coste, is an iconic mansion in Montpellier, built in the 3rd quarter of the 18th century. Located at 14 rue du Collège, it replaces a former 16th century hotel belonging to the Joubert family. Its construction in 1759 was initiated by René Coste, then great provost of the Maréchain du Languedoc, who acquired and rebuilt it immediately in its present form. The building is distinguished by a French composition, with a facade decorated with carved key windows, wrought iron balconies, and an attic overlooking an imposing cornice. The access is carried out by a monumental gate flanked by two pavilions, opening onto a courtyard paved with rolled stones.
The hotel is inseparable from Monsieur de Joubert, the last Treasurer of the Bourse des Etats du Languedoc, an institution abolished during the French Revolution. This link with the pre-revolutionary provincial elites gives the monument a major historical dimension. Since 16 October 1944, its protection has been included in historic monuments, and it specifically covers facades and roofs, highlighting the heritage value of its architecture. Sources indicate an approximate location, with a map accuracy considered fair (note 5/10), and an address confirmed by the Merimée base.
Originally, the hotel belonged to Joubert's family before being rebuilt by Coste, marking an architectural and social transition. Decorative elements, such as carved keys and wrought iron balconies, reflect the taste for 18th-century classical elegance. Although the building lacks a French-style garden, it embodies the splendor of urban residences in the former province of Languedoc, now integrated into the Occitanie region. The available data do not specify its current use (visits, rentals, etc.), but its protected status makes it a key witness to the Montpellieran heritage.
