Origin and history

The Hotel de la Brigade, located in Narbonne, is a historical monument whose construction spans the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Its street façade features an arched entrance gate in basket handle, opening onto a court of honor. At the bottom of this courtyard, a passage of the same style, now walled, led once to a floor decorated with a cruciform basin, now disappeared after the sale and construction of this part of the land. To the left of the gate, a two-fly staircase, accessible by a similar arch, serves the upper floors.

The inner courtyard reveals a north facade pierced by three arches in basket cove, remains of the old entrances of the sheds. The south wing houses a large, almost square, three-flyed staircase whose silts are supported by ground arches. This staircase, reserved for the first floor, is a notable architectural element, as is the wrought iron ramp that accompanies it. The facades and roofs, as well as this staircase, were inscribed in the Historical Monuments by order of 20 August 1976.

The building, owned by the commune of Narbonne, illustrates the civil architecture of the 17th and 18th centuries, with stylistic features such as arches in basket handle and mouldings. Its spatial organization, centered on the court of honour, reflects the residential and functional uses of the era, although some parts were later modified or walled.
