Origin and history
The Hotel de la chambre des notaires du Pas-de-Calais in Arras is a historical monument built in the 3rd quarter of the 19th century, under the Second Empire. It occupies the site of the former Jesuit college, showing a typical urban reuse of this period. Its architecture, marked by a stone façade and a courtyard framed by two pavilions (one of which housed stables), is distinguished by its unusual magnitude for Arras at that time. The exterior decorations, such as the sculptures and ironworks of the balconies, are inspired by 18th century private hotels, while the interiors were preserved in their original state.
The building, classified as Historic Monument in 2006, specifically protects its facades and roofs, the two entrance pavilions (with the decoration of the right stable), as well as the floor of the courtyard and its fence wall. These elements reflect a desire to preserve an architectural heritage representative of the 19th century urban transformations, combining classical heritage and contemporary innovations. The property now belongs to a public establishment, although its current use (visits, rentals, etc.) is not specified in the available sources.
The location of the hotel at 1bis rue du Collège in Arras is located in a neighbourhood marked by the educational and religious history of the city, with the Jesuit College playing a central role before its disappearance. The building thus illustrates the transition between an institutional past and a modern professional vocation, while maintaining emblematic architectural features. The accuracy of its geographical location is estimated a priori satisfactory (note 6/10), based on available data.
