Angle Oriel: inscription by order of 12 October 1929
Origin and history
The Hotel de la Charrue is a historic monument located in Saverne, in the department of Bas-Rhin, in the Grand Est region. Built in the first half of the seventeenth century, it is distinguished by its typical architecture of this period, including its corner oriel, which led to its inscription as historical monuments in 1929. The building is located at 137 Grand-Rue and 1 rue des Clefs in downtown Saverne.
Originally, the site housed a hotel house mentioned in the 16th century, but it was destroyed during the fire in the suburbs in 1622. The present building was rebuilt on an undetermined date after this event, and then redesigned in the 20th century by adding an additional floor. Although partially modified, it retains remarkable architectural elements, such as the oral, protected by ministerial decree.
The Hotel de la Charrue illustrates the urban evolution of Saverne, marked by successive destructions and reconstructions. Its inscription in 1929 reflects the desire to preserve an architectural heritage representative of the 17th century Alsace, while integrating subsequent adaptations. Today, there remains a tangible example of local history, mixing late medieval heritage and modern transformations.
