Origin and history

The Hotel de la Division, also known as Hotel Gros de Béler, is a private hotel built in 1783 in Périgueux, Dordogne, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. Sponsored by Jean Baptiste Michel Duclaud, canon of Saint-Front Cathedral back from Italy, the building passed in 1785 to the Gros de Béler family on the occasion of the marriage of Jeanne Michel-Duclaud with Jean Antoine Gros de Béler. Its architecture, attributed to architect Louis, is distinguished by a plan massed in rectangle with slightly rounded corners, adorned with triangular front bodies and a terrace overlooking vaulted cellars.

In the 19th century, the hotel changed owners several times: acquired by a certain Durand in 1863, it was then bequeathed to the family Bardy de Fourtou (or Bardi de Fourtou), then passed to the Secrestat-Escande. In the 20th century, the municipality of Périgueux planned its destruction in 1954 to establish a theatre, but the project was abandoned in 1956 under pressure from the Historical and Archaeological Society of the Périgord and the population. In 1958, architect André Secret rearranged the entrance to the south façade, on the alleys of Tourny.

Ranked as historical monuments since November 9, 1960 for its facades and roofs, the hotel retains an emblematic address: initially located at 2 avenue de Paris (current avenue Georges-Pompidou), it is now identified in 5 place Yves-Guéna, after the rebaptism of the square in 2003. Its history reflects the urban and heritage developments of Périgueux, between preservation and modern adaptations.
