Origin and history

The Hotel de la Feronnays, located 7 rue de Paris in Moulins (Allier), is a remarkable example of 17th-century civil architecture. Its black and red brick facades, combined with the stone, and its arched passage in basket handle reflect the milly style of the time. Inside, a staircase with eight straight flights, bordered by a wrought iron ramp with symmetrical patterns, bears witness to the artisanal know-how of the early seventeenth century. The street façade, with its high windows, balustrade and wrought iron balconies, was redone in 1749.

The hotel is built on the site of an old building mentioned in the 15th century. In 1749 Jean-Denis Guériot, king's adviser and size receiver, rebuilt it and decorated the facade with sculptures depicting atlantes and cariatids. In 1765 Count Pierre de La Ferronnays, a Breton aristocrat married to a local heiress, acquired his name. The hotel then became a meeting place under the Restoration, before being restored in the 19th century by the lawyer Auguste Blandin.

The hotel is partially protected as historical monuments: the gate and balcony were inscribed in 1927, the street façade classified in 1942, and the courtyard facades as well as the wrought iron staircase inscribed in 1977. After several changes of owners in the 20th century, it is now divided into condominiums.
