Origin and history

The Hotel de La Fite, located in Rabastens in the Tarn, is a private hotel built in the early eighteenth century. It occupies the location of two pre-existing houses. Around 1700 Jean-François de Rollet, Marquis de Cordes and Baron de Castelferrus, undertook his restoration by integrating elements of neighbouring hotels, including the Vinel hotel and part of the former Caulet hotel. The facade was unified with a two-storey central body and lateral wings. Interior decors, including Louis XIV and Louis XV stucco, still adorn the first floor lounges.

In 1898 the hotel was given to the brothers of the Christian schools by the last descendant of the family of La Fite de Pelleporc. Since 1985, it has been home to the museum of the country of rabastin, which is listed as historical monuments. The museum exhibits various collections: local archaeology, varnished lands of Girossens (XVIIth–XIXth centuries), works of the carpenter's companion Roger Bellegarde, and more than 1,800 models of embroidery bequeathed by René Bégué (known as Rébé), a Parisian brodeur who lived in Rabastens.

The first floor lounges, decorated with 18th-century stucco, host temporary exhibitions. The hotel has been partially protected since 1989, including facades, roofs, stairwells, and interior decorations. The Association of Friends of the Museum regularly enriches the collections, thanks in particular to bequests, such as that of Jean-Christian Tautil in 2023, valued at 400,000 euros to enhance local works.
