Origin and history

Hotel de la Mare is a private hotel located in the preserved area of the city of Dijon, in Burgundy-Franche-Comté. Built during the fourth quarter of the seventeenth century, it represents an architectural example of this period in the region. Its inscription in the title of historical monuments, effective since 1947, bears witness to its heritage importance and the desire to preserve this type of building emblematic of Dijon's urban history.

Private hotels, such as the Hotel de la Mare, were often built by the aristocracy or the wealthy bourgeoisie in the seventeenth century. In Dijon, a city with a rich political and economic history, these residences reflected the social status of their owners. Their presence in the protected area of the city underlines the importance of this heritage in the collective memory and architectural identity of Burgundy-Franche-Comté.

These buildings served both as places of residence and representation, illustrating the way of life of the elites of the time.
