Origin and history
The Hotel de la Monnaie de Figeac, built in the 14th century, is a rare vestige of medieval monetary workshops in Occitanie. This monument, located in the city of Figeac, reflects the economic importance of the region at that time, then under the influence of the Counts of Toulouse and the kings of France. Its architecture and location in the historic centre suggest a key role in local trade.
In the 14th century, Quercy – of which Figeac is a member – was a dynamic region marked by agriculture, crafts and river trade thanks to the Lot. Monetary workshops such as Figeac's were involved in the typing of coins for regional transactions, in a context where the royal currency was gradually imposed on feudal currencies. The presence of such a building also underlines Figeac's status as a strategic market place between the Central Massif and the Aquitaine.
The Lot department, created in 1790 from the former Quercy province, has preserved traces of this medieval heritage. Although the archive specific to the Mint Hotel is rare in the source text, its existence attests to the early economic organization of the city. Today, Figeac remains a place of memory, thanks to figures such as Jean-François Champollion, a native of the city, who contributed to its cultural influence far beyond the Middle Ages.
