Origin and history

Hotel de la Potorgerie is a neo-classical mansion built in Nantes between 1770 and 1780. It is distinguished by its original plan, symmetrical to that of the Hotel Cazenove de Pradines (no 17 rue Georges-Clemenceau), with a three-winged framed courtyard. This type of scheduling, rare in the city, is only shared with the Hotel de Comequiers. Its facade, surmounted by a pediment with coat of arms, reflects the architectural elegance of the 18th century Nantes.

The hotel has been listed for historical monuments since 6 June 1988, only for its facades and roofs on street. This classification protects a heritage representative of the Nantes urban planning of the time, marked by private hotels built between courtyard and garden. The building also illustrates the influence of neo-classicism in the Pays de la Loire region, where local elites adopted this style to assert their status.

The sources mention two twin hotels, whose construction around 1778 is part of an urban renewal in Nantes. The book Nantes in the 18th century: urban planning and architecture (Pierre Lelièvre, 1988) highlights their originality compared to the other houses of the period. No information is available on sponsors or architects, but their design reflects the social codes of the aristocracy and rising bourgeoisie.

Hotel de la Pilorgerie is located at 15 rue Georges-Clemenceau, in a central area of Nantes. Its current condition and uses (visit, rental) are not specified in the sources. The Merimée database and Creative Commons licenses (photos) document its existence, but no details are provided on any restorations or modifications after its construction.
