Origin and history
Hotel de la Porte, located at 5 rue Marmillat in Clermont-Ferrand, is a mansion built in the 16th century. This monument is distinguished by its inner courtyard with a polygonal staircase turret, whose access door is surmounted by a carved cartridge. This cartridge, decorated with an oval shield with arms of the family of the Gate, also bears the date of 1577, offering a precise testimony of its time of construction. House bodies still retain characteristic windows of the 16th century, although their shingles have been removed.
The front door of the courtyard presents an arch in basket handle, embellished with a prismatic mouluration, an architectural element typical of the Renaissance. The entire building was included in the inventory of Historic Monuments by order of November 9, 1926, recognizing its heritage value. Today, the Hotel de la Porte belongs to the municipality of Clermont-Ferrand, but information about its access to the public, such as visits or rentals, is not specified in the available sources.
Architectural details, such as the carved cartridge and original windows, reflect the influence of French Renaissance styles in the region. The presence of the arms of the Porte family suggests that this private hotel was probably the residence of a noble or affluent family of Clermont-Ferrand. The partial preservation of these elements, despite subsequent changes, allows us to understand the architectural and social evolution of the city over the centuries.
