Origin and history

The Hôtel de la Roulière, located in Niort, is built around 1828 for Jean-Victor Chebrou de la Roulière, then mayor of the city. The architect Pierre-Théophile Segretain designed this neo-classical building, marked by a central forebody under triangular pediment, Tuscan pilasters and Egyptian capitals. The rectangular plan, with two wings surrounding a closed courtyard, reflects the influence of the architectural codes of the time.

Between 1886 and 1897, the building houses a high school, before welcoming the Chamber of Commerce of Niort from 1900 to 1913. These changes in usage illustrate its adaptation to the administrative and educational needs of the city. Ranked Historic Monument in 1990, the hotel also includes its portal in protection, highlighting its heritage importance.

The location of the Hôtel de la Roulière, at 63 rue Saint-Gelais, in the Deux-Sèvres department (New Aquitaine region), makes it a witness to the town planning of Niortis of the 19th century. Its eclectic style, combining ancient references and contemporary influences, makes it a remarkable example of bourgeois architecture of this period.
