Origin and history
The Hotel de la Teyssonnière, originally named Hotel de la Gabelle, is a private hotel located at 23 rue Bourgmayer in Bourg-en-Bresse, in the department of Ain. Built in the 16th and 18th centuries, it illustrates the civil architecture of these periods, mixing Renaissance elements and later modifications. The building has been included in the inventory of historical monuments since 1947, especially for its honorary staircase and its 16th century door.
The hotel is associated with the family of La Teyssonnière, who owned it. Charles Agricole Nestor de La Teyssonnière, born in 1777 in this hotel, is the most prominent figure. The building, representative of the Burgundy heritage, also bears witness to the role of private hotels in the urban and social organization of Bourg-en-Bresse, a city marked by its administrative and commercial history under the Ancien Régime.
The 1947 protection specifically concerns remarkable architectural elements, such as the 16th century gate and the staircase, reflecting the artistic and historical significance of the site. Today, the hotel remains a testament to the aristocratic and fiscal past of the region, linked to the gabelle, a tax on salt that deeply marked the local economic life.
