Origin and history
The Hotel de Lezay-Marnézia is a mansion built around 1740 in the town of Lons-le-Saunier, Burgundy-Franche-Comté. This monument illustrates the civil architecture of the first half of the 18th century, with an overall structure preserved despite centuries. Its inscription as Historic Monument in 1996 protects both the building and its interior decorations, made mainly in the nineteenth century.
The construction of the hotel is part of an urban context marked by the emergence of an affluent bourgeoisie, anxious to manifest its status by prestigious residences. In Lons-le-Saunier, a town known for its thermal springs since ancient times, private hotels like this reflect the social and economic importance of local elites. Their presence is evidence of a period of prosperity, where the art of living and the decorative arts were central to the life of the owners.
In the 19th century, the Hotel de Lezay-Marnézia underwent few structural changes, but its interiors are enriched with the characteristic decorations of this period. These developments, now protected, offer a remarkable example of the evolution of tastes and craft techniques between the 18th and 19th centuries. The building, located in Perraud Square, remains a major architectural and historical testimony for the city and the region.
