Origin and history
The Hotel de Lignéville is a town house dated 1554, located in the village of Châtillon-sur-Saône, in the southwest of the Vosges department. Its Renaissance architecture is distinguished by a facade decorated with doric columns surrounding the door, surmounted by a triangular pediment. The muzzle windows and the entrance to the crib cellar recall the local medieval and Renaissance buildings. Although classified as a historical monument since 1984, its attribution to the family of Ligniville remains uncertain, despite its name.
The house may have belonged to an affluent merchant or Jean Demongeot, provost of Châtillon-sur-Saône in 1554, but no evidence confirms this hypothesis. Its large windows and large cellar with two entrances suggest a wine-growing activity. Close to the castle, a carved stone bearing the shield of Christophe de Ligniville, surrounded by the necklace of the order of Saint-Michel, attests to its presence in the region, without any proven link with this building.
Ranked by decree of 31 December 1984, the Hotel de Lignéville is today an architectural testimony of the 3rd quarter of the 16th century. Its exact address, 3 rue du Presbytère or rue du Château, reflects its integration into the historical urban fabric of Châtillon-sur-Saône. The accuracy of its location remains moderate, depending on available sources.
