Origin and history

The Hotel de Magnanat, located in Sarlat-la-Canéda in the Dordogne, is a historical monument dating back to the 15th century. Several original elements remain, such as doors and windows typical of this medieval period. These remains bear witness to its original architecture, characteristic of urban mansions of the time.

In the 18th century, the hotel underwent major changes. The windows were modified to fit the aesthetic cannons of the Enlightenment century, and a porch was added to the facade. This porch, framed by ionic pilasters and surmounted by a volute pediment, illustrates the influence of classical style on ancient buildings. These transformations reflect the evolution of architectural tastes and the desire to beautify local elites.

The Hotel de Magnanat has been partially protected since 24 February 1944, with an inscription under the title of Historical Monuments for its facades, roofs and entrance porch. This official recognition underscores the heritage value of its medieval and classical elements, as well as their relative conservation status. Today, the building remains a testimony of the historical strata of Sarlat, a city marked by its medieval past and its adaptations to later times.
