Origin and history
The Hotel de Magny, located 3 rue Collot in Montpellier, finds its origins in a collection of medieval buildings dating from the 4th quarter of the 14th century. These gothic structures were profoundly altered in the mid-17th century by Magny's family, which gave them their present appearance. The composition around a central courtyard, the ironworks and the facade on the street (dated 1650-1670) and a painted ceiling of the first half of the 17th century testify to this recast. The elevations on the courtyard and the stairwell were resumed later, probably in the 18th century.
In the 18th century, the building changed several times from owners, including the Cabanès de Puimisson family, which brought a rich interior decor around 1770. The gypsies adorning the rooms on the 1st floor, now classified, date from this period. The monument was partially inscribed in the Historical Monuments in 1995 (façades, roofs, staircases, vaulted rooms) and then classified in 1997 for its three decorated rooms, including a boudoir and a gypserie salon.
The building thus illustrates Montpellier's architectural evolution, moving from a medieval structure to an aristocratic residence of the 17th and 18th centuries, marked by luxurious interior decorations. The successive protections highlight its heritage value, blending Gothic heritage and classic embellishments. The protected elements also include stairway and vestibule ironworks, characteristic of the Louis XIII-Louis XIV style.
The exact location, 3 Collot Street, corresponds to the address referenced in the Merimée database under Insee 34172 (Hérault). Although the cartographic accuracy is considered satisfactory a priori (note 6/10), the hotel remains a major testimony of Montpellieran urban planning, between the Middle Ages and the modern era.
