Origin and history

The Hotel de Marabail is a historic monument located in Strasbourg, in the Bas-Rhin department, in the Grand Est region. Built during the second quarter of the 18th century, this building illustrates the civil architecture of this period, marked by the elegance and refinement of urban mansions. Its designation as a historic monument in 1929 reflects its heritage value, particularly for its remarkable features such as the façade, the vantals of the door, the ironwork, the staircase and the interior woodwork.

Located at 15 rue de l'Arc-en-Ciel, the Hotel de Marabail is part of the architectural landscape of Strasbourg, a city then under French influence after its attachment to the kingdom in 1681. At that time, Strasbourg was a dynamic city, where aristocracy and the affluent bourgeoisie built residences reflecting their social status. These private hotels, often located in the city centre, serve as both a place of life and a place of representation, welcoming receptions and activities related to worldly life.

The inscription of the Hotel de Marabail in 1929 specifically concerns architectural and decorative elements, such as the facade with its vantals and ironwork, as well as the staircase and woodwork of the rooms on the ground floor. These details underline the importance attached to ornamentation and craftsmanship in the prestige homes of the 18th century. Today, this monument contributes to the richness of the Strasbourg heritage, alongside other buildings classified in the city and the department of Bas-Rhin.
