Origin and history

The Hotel de Marsilly is a Parisian mansion located on Rue du Cherche-Midi in the 6th arrondissement. Built between 1738 and 1740 by the entrepreneur Claude Bonneau, it was designed with the architect Jacques Hardouin-Mansart de Sagonne, then in vogue at the Faubourg Saint-Germain. The sculptor-ornemanist Nicolas Pineau, Mansart's collaborator, took part in his decoration, illustrating the rising rock style.

The hotel remained in the Bonneau family before welcoming prestigious tenants, such as the Marquis de Hautefort, Ambassador of Louis XV, then Marshal de Bérenger. In 1803 he became the property of Minister Charles Lambrechts, who died there in 1823. The artist and collector Nicolas Mailand acquired it in 1841 and had it made by architect Amable Ravoisié.

Since 1881, the hotel has housed the Andriveau Genealogical Archives, after having been the seat of the Chamber of Genealogists of France. Partially classified as historical monuments in 1997 and 1998, it is distinguished by its curved façade and wrought iron ramp, notable works by Pineau. The Louis XVI panelling and the 18th-century large living room still bear witness to its long history.

The protections for historical monuments cover the facades, roofs, the ground of the plot, as well as the body of houses between courtyard and garden. Two previous inscriptions (1928 and 1997) were cancelled, confirming the heritage value of this emblematic building of the Paris des Lumières.
