Origin and history

The Hotel de Millery is a mansion built between 1680 and 1681 in the city of Autun, Burgundy-Franche-Comté. This building, typical of 17th century civil architecture, replaces a collection of houses dating from the 15th and 16th centuries. Its interior preserves notable decorative elements, such as painted panelling and adorned flooring, characteristic of the late seventeenth century.

The monument has been listed as a historical monument since 5 June 2001, protecting the entire hotel, its gate and its fence. Located at 12 rue Notre-Dame, it reflects the urban and architectural evolution of Autun, a city marked by its rich historical past, especially Roman and medieval.

At the time of its construction, Autun was a dynamic city, integrated into the kingdom of France under Louis XIV. Private hotels, such as Millery's, reflected the social status of their owners, often from the bourgeoisie or the local nobility. These urban residences served as both a place of life and a place of representation, illustrating the prestige of their occupants in a hierarchical society.
