Origin and history

The Hotel de Monery, also known as the Hotel de Saint-Priest d'Urgell, is a private hotel in Avignon, Vaucluse. Built in the 18th century, it embodies the architectural and artistic elegance of this period. His story began in 1742, when he belonged to Charles-Bernard de Guilhen, before being ceded to the Monery, a family of doctors in law. Construction and interior decoration, attributed to renowned artists, transform the hotel into a refined place.

The interior decorations of the Monery hotel are remarkable: the upper doors of the salon could be the work of Nicolas Lancret, while Jean Succharelli adorns the boudoir and Jean Pillement decorates the dining room on the first floor. The architect Jean-Baptiste II Péru was probably at the origin of its construction after 1760. The hotel now maintains a structure close to that described in 1769, with a majestic staircase and richly decorated lounges. Its acquisition by the Saint-Priest d'Urgell family in 1885, after several changes of owners, marks a key step in its history.

In the 19th century, the hotel passed into the hands of the Poulin family, linked to the Messageries Lafitte, before being transmitted by marriage to the Saint-Priest d'Urgell. In 2018, it was acquired by the Minerve Real Estate Corporation. Ranked a historic monument in 1989, the Hotel de Monery bears witness to the Avignon architectural and artistic heritage, combining legal history, commerce and art.

The protection of the hotel in 1989 underlines its heritage importance. Historical sources, such as Joseph Girard's works or the archives of the Merimée base, confirm his role in local history. Today, there remains a preserved example of the 18th century Provencal hotel, with an emblematic address: 21 rue Petite-Fusterie in Avignon.
