Origin and history
The Hotel de Montboissier, built at the hinge of the 15th and 16th centuries, was one of the largest private homes in Clermont-Ferrand. Its architecture consisted of a main house body, a tower, and an enclosing garden decorated with beds. Today, there remains only the turret of stairway in screws and an oratory located on the floor, testimonies of its medieval origin.
Acquired by the city in 1801, the hotel was converted into an episcopal palace until 1847. This transformation partially altered its structure: the current pierces date back to the 18th and 19th centuries, and the large enclosed garden, formerly located to the north, was loti. Despite these changes, the building maintained its original organization, with a building body flanked by a turret and an entrance to a courtyard.
Among the protected elements is the armored door of the stair turret, inscribed in the Historical Monuments by order of 21 August 1989. The hotel, owned by the department of Puy-de-Dôme, illustrates the evolution of the use of an aristocratic building from private residence to religious power, before becoming a public heritage.
