Origin and history

The Hotel de Montbrun, also known as Maison du Grand Henry or Hotel de Feydeau de Marville, is an emblematic private hotel in the Place des Vosges, in the 4th arrondissement of Paris. Built between 1605 and 1612 for Captain Marchand, it owes its nickname to a bust of Henry IV adorning its side façade, on the present rue des Francs-Bourgeois. This architectural detail reflects the tribute paid to the king, a major figure in the reconstruction of Paris after the Wars of Religion.

Acquired in 1654 by the Marquis de Montbrun, the hotel changed hands in the 18th century to belong to the Feydeau family of Marville. His history took a philanthropic turn in 1852, when Étienne Louis Victor Bellanger, annuitant born in the hotel in 1806, left him to the town hall of the 8th old arrondissement. This gesture is accompanied by a clause: the public assistance of the hospitals in Paris, the final beneficiary, must maintain its burial at Père-Lachaise. A commemorative plaque on the façade recalls this gift.

Ranked a historic monument in 1954, the hotel retains its prestige despite the centuries. After two years of renovation, it reopens in 2019 under the guise of a tourist hotel of the Evok group, mixing architectural heritage and modernity. Its six rooms and suites offer an immersion in the history of the Place des Vosges, while perpetuating the memory of its illustrious occupants and donors.
