Origin and history
The hotel of Monteyremard, located in Puy-en-Velay (Haute-Loire), has its origins in the 14th century, as evidenced by its vaulted cellars and architectural remains (pillars, traces of holes). These medieval elements, although partial, attest to an ancient occupation of the site, typical of the urban houses of that time in Velay.
In 1559, a fire ravaged the building almost entirely. The reconstruction is organized around two parallel houses, separated by an inner courtyard and connected by a gallery served by a staircase turret. The Renaissance style then dominates the decor, although the ground floor on Raphael Street preserves archaic dogid vaults, falling back on carved caps. This mixture of modernity and tradition illustrates the architectural transition of the 16th century.
In the seventeenth century, a painted decor adorns the ceiling and the top of the walls of the second floor living room. Composed of geometrical, floral motifs and scenes inspired by the Metamorphoses of Ovid, this ensemble reflects the influence of classical arts. In the next century, the facade on Raphaël Street was rebuilt in stone, pierced with large openings, marking a final stylistic evolution.
The hotel is partially protected under the title of historical monuments: global registration in 2006 (with the exception of the classified salon), then ranking this salon in 2010 for its painted decorations. These measures underline its heritage value, mixing medieval, Renaissance and Baroque heritage.
The exact address, 48 Raphaël Street, and its extension on Waldeck-Boudinhon Street (INSEE 43157 code) confirm its anchoring in the historic centre of Puy-en-Velay. The sources (Wikipedia, Monumentum, Merimée base) document its evolution, although some details, such as sponsors, remain unknown.
