Origin and history
The Hotel de Montferrier, located at 23 rue de l'Aiguillerie in Montpellier, is a mansion built in the 17th century in the form of a quadrilateral organized around an inner courtyard. At that time, the building belonged to the Marquis de Montferrier, a local aristocratic figure, and also housed the Court of Auditors, stressing its administrative and social importance. The fronts on courtyard, structured on two floors with a ground floor and a floor of a high level, are surmounted by a cornice decorated with gargoyles, reflecting the classical architectural style of the period. Inside, the large halls retain fully painted French ceilings, while the large staircase, built on crawling arches, is styled with an equally decorated box ceiling.
The complete renovation of the building in the middle of the 17th century incorporated older elements, including a Lombard-style dormitory vault, a vestige of an earlier construction. This fusion of styles illustrates the architectural evolution of the site, where luxury and functionality mix. The facades on the courtyard and the large staircase, as well as the vaulted porch, were protected by an inscription to the Historical Monuments since 1944, recognizing their heritage value. The building, although partially accessible, remains a major testimony of Montpellieran history, mixing medieval heritage and classicism of the Great Century.
The Hôtel de Montferrier is part of an urban context marked by the rise of Montpellier as a political and cultural centre under the Ancien Régime. The presence of the Court of Auditors confirms the city's growing role in the royal administration, while its architecture reflects the influence of Parisian models adapted to provincial elites. The interior decorations, especially the painted ceilings, recall the taste for refined ornamentation characteristic of the particular hotels of the era, intended to impress by their fascist.
