Origin and history
Hotel de Montfort, also known as Hotel du Prince Charles, is a private hotel located 6 Place Clémenceau in Senones, in the Vosges department. Built during the 3rd quarter of the 18th century, it is representative of the refined civil architecture of that time. Its facades, roofs and interior staircases, including the wrought iron ramp, have been protected since 1982.
The hotel's gardens, known as Prince Charles Gardens, occupy an elevated platform. In 1772, astronomer Charles Messier made observations, highlighting the scientific interest of the place. These gardens, registered since 1991, house a pond and an alcove adorned with a cul-de-four dome, from which springs a fish-shaped fountain.
The exterior staircase, built during the same period, is in red sandstone and has a wrought iron ramp that also borders the terrace. This monument, owned by the commune, illustrates the architectural heritage and landscape of Lorraine. Its partial classification as historical monuments in 1982 and 1991 reflects its heritage value.
The Hotel de Montfort is today an emblematic place of Senones, combining local history, architecture and science. Its interior and exterior staircase, as well as its gardens, are remarkable elements that attract the attention of visitors and researchers.
