Origin and history
The Hotel de Montmorency-Bours, also called Petit hôtel de Montmorency, is located at 85 rue du Cherche-Midi in the 6th arrondissement of Paris. Built in 1743 by the gathering of several houses, it owes its name to Count Joseph-Alexandre de Montmorency-Bours, who acquired it in 1752. This assembly explains the irregularity of its facades, still visible today. The hotel has been home to the Hébert Museum since the 20th century, which is part of the Orsay Museum, but it has been closed since 2004 due to pending consolidation work.
The facade on the hotel street has been listed as historical monuments since 22 February 1926. This partial classification protects an architectural element representative of its time, although the whole building does not enjoy full protection. The site remains a testimony of the 18th century Parisian urban planning, marked by the transformation of old houses into private hotels for the aristocracy.
The Hôtel de Montmorency-Bours is part of a series of properties linked to the Montmorency house in Paris, although its history is less documented than other hotels in this family, such as those in the 3rd or 9th arrondissements. Unlike the latter, often destroyed or profoundly reshaped, the Cherche-Midi retains part of its original integrity, despite its prolonged closure and the lack of recent restoration.
