Origin and history
Hotel de Montravel is a mansion built in the 18th century, located in the municipality of Joyeuse, in Ardèche. This monument is distinguished by its characteristic facade of this period, as well as its wrought iron inside staircase, bearing witness to the artisanal know-how of the period. The building is a representative example of the civil architecture of Vivarais under the Old Regime, reflecting the social status of its owners.
The hotel was owned by the Tardy de Montravel family, notably after the marriage of Louis Damien Tardy, Count of Montravel, with Marie Rosalie Dorothée Pellier de Sampzon, heiress of one of the greatest fortunes of Vivarais. The Pelliers, steward of the duchy of Joyeuse lands, played a major economic and political role in the region. This marriage strengthened their local influence and allowed the acquisition of this prestigious property.
Ranked as historical monuments in 1988, the Hotel de Montravel is subject to specific protection for its remarkable architectural elements. The facades, the roofs, the stairwell with its vestibule, as well as the north-east living room and its original decoration on the ground floor, are included in the additional inventory. Today, the building belongs to the municipality of Joyeuse, although its current use (visits, rental, accommodation) is not specified in the available sources.
The location of the hotel, at 68 Montée du Barry, places this monument at the heart of Joyeuse's historical heritage, a city marked by its ducal past. Its architecture and family history illustrate the social and economic dynamics of the Ardèche in the 18th century, between provincial nobility and rising bourgeoisie. Available sources (Wikipedia, Monumentum, Merimée base) confirm its heritage importance, although some details, such as its current state of conservation, remain limited.
