Origin and history
The Hotel de Mèredieu d'Ambois is a 16th-century mansion in Périgueux, Dordogne. Located in the heart of the city's protected area, it is distinguished by its Gothic porch carved with vegetal motifs and its ancient woodwork. This monument, located on 2 rue de la Nation, is one of the few examples of Renaissance architecture preserved near Saint-Front Cathedral.
The construction of the hotel dates back to the 16th century, a period marked by the influence of late Gothic and Renaissance styles in Périgord. In 1947, the building was included in the inventory of historic monuments for its remarkable elements, such as the stone-to-vis staircase and ground windows. Although the splinters have disappeared, the nailed door and architectural details still bear witness to its past prestige.
Private property, the hotel of Motherdieu d'Ambois illustrates the civil heritage of Périgueux, a city where economic and religious activity was then dominated by the cathedral and bourgeois families. Its location on the right bank of Isle reflects the medieval and reborn urbanization of the city, between sacred spaces and aristocratic dwellings.
