Origin and history

The hotel of Moussac, built in the 2nd quarter of the 18th century (construction completed in 1755), is an iconic mansion in Montmorillon, Vienna. He was the residence of the Augier de Moussac family, anobligated under Louis XV after obtaining a position as king's secretary (attested in 1747, confirmed by letters of honour in 1772). Its architecture reflects the prestige of this poitevin lineage, incorporating refined decorative elements.

The facades, roofs, gate and entrance pavilions have been protected since 1973, as have the wrought iron staircase, the library fireplace and several rooms with preserved woodwork and decorations (large and small living rooms, boudoir, dining room, five bedrooms upstairs). These elements reflect the fascination of the provincial elites under the Old Regime, combining residential and representative functions.

Ranked a historic monument by decree of 12 July 1973, the hotel illustrates the influence of families anoublied by charges under Louis XV. Its state of conservation and its interior decorations (woodworks, fireplaces) make it a remarkable example of 18th-century civil architecture in Poitou, now located in New Aquitaine.
