Origin and history
The Hotel de Nattes, located in Béziers, is a historical monument whose origins date back to the family of Nattes, originally from Rouergue. Established in Saint-Thiberry in 1642, this family settled permanently in Béziers in 1759. The hotel, built on a once fragmented plot, is distinguished by a south facade with bosses, organized on three levels and initially pierced by arcades. Its gate gives access to a circular vestibule covered with a cut stone dome, while the walls once housed painted decorations, including a monumental cartridge in grey recently discovered.
In the eighteenth century, the hotel's architecture reflects the constraints of its prow-shaped island, with ground openings and elegant ironwork balconies. At the end of the 19th century, the hotel changed ownership: Charles Victor Fulbrand Delpon de Vaux entrusted architect Léopold Carlier with an ambitious renovation. The latter transforms the ground floor by adding two shops (deleting the side arcades), and modernizes the first floor of the south wing in an eclectic style, with superimposed glass galleries and a glass bay decorated with colourful stained windows. The interior decoration, including glass windows and woodwork, bears witness to the artistic quality of this intervention.
The Hotel de Nattes has been partially protected since 2017: its facades, roofs, circular vestibule, the courtyard of honour, the large staircase and the whole of the first floor (with its glass galleries) are inscribed in the Historical Monuments. These elements illustrate the architectural evolution of the building, between 18th century classical heritage and 19th century eclectic transformations. The site also retains traces of its family history, linked to the social ascent of the Nattes in the Béziers d'Ancien Régime.
Today, the Hotel de Nattes remains a private property, combining historical heritage and subsequent adaptations. Its address, 13 rue de la Citadelle, and its location in an atypical island make it a unique testimony of bezier urban planning, between topographic constraints and architectural ambitions. The work of Léopold Carlier, although changing the original structure, has contributed to enriching its character, notably by adding remarkable stained glass and interior decorations.
