Façades and roofs of the hotel and the carosse shed; vestibule and large staircase with its wrought iron ramp and gypsum ceiling (Box CP 715): inscription by order of 16 March 1977

Origin and history

Hôtel de Palerne is an iconic monument located in L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, in the department of Vaucluse, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. Built during the first quarter of the eighteenth century, this mansion illustrates the civil architecture of this period, marked by an increasing refinement of urban residences intended for the aristocracy or the affluent bourgeoisie. Its inscription in the title of the Historical Monuments, effective since 1977, protects in particular its facades, its roofs, as well as remarkable interior elements such as the vestibule and the large staircase adorned with a wrought iron ramp and a ceiling in gypserie.

At that time, L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, like other cities in Provence, was a dynamic place of commerce, thanks to its canals and its market. Private hotels, such as the Hotel de Palerne, served as residences for influential families, while reflecting their social status through luxurious architectural elements. These buildings also played a role in local life, sometimes hosting meetings or events related to city management or economic exchanges.

The building is located at 19 rue de la République, a central address that highlights its importance in the urban fabric. The legal protections it enjoys also concern a carross shed, recalling the practical use of these spaces for the movement and transport of occupants. The 1977 registration preserved these characteristics, while integrating the hotel into the region's recognized architectural heritage.

Today, although information about its access to the public remains limited, the Hôtel de Palerne continues to bear witness to local history and to the evolution of the lifestyles of the Provençal elites in the 18th century. Its state of conservation and its location make it a point of interest for lovers of history and architecture, even if its current vocation (visits, renting, etc.) is not explicitly documented in available sources.
