Origin and history
The Charente-Maritime prefecture hotel in La Rochelle consists of three private hotels: the Poupet Hotel, the Lanusse Hotel and the Pont des Granges Hotel. These buildings, built mainly in the 18th century, illustrate the civil architecture of the period, combining luxury and sobriety. The Hotel Poupet, built in 1785 for the shipowner Michel Poupet, is the most emblematic, with a 19th century façade taken over by the Hotel Lanusse to harmonize with it. The hotel of Pont des Granges, probably earlier, completes this set.
In 1814, the prefectural services, previously installed in the former Stewardship, transferred after the acquisition of the hotels Poupet and Lanusse. The Pont des Granges hotel was added in 1904 to expand the offices. The interiors, although redesigned, retain original elements such as stone stairs, Empire fireplaces, or sculpted panelling in the western wing of the Hotel Poupet. These decorations bear witness to the fascination of the shipowners and traders of the Rock.
The ensemble has been listed as historical monuments since 10 May 2006, protecting facades, interior decorations, the garden and its fences. The three hotels reflect the architectural and social developments of La Rochelle, from the port activities of the eighteenth century to the modern prefectural administration. Their enfilade arrangement and their internal courtyards underline their unity despite their distinct origins.
Among the highlights, Napoleon stayed there on August 6, 1808 in the Hotel Poupet, then owned by the shipowner. Subsequent transformations, such as the resumption of the facade of the Lanusse Hotel in the 19th century, aim to standardize the exterior appearance. Today, the site remains a symbol of the administrative and architectural heritage of New Aquitaine.
The elevations on the garden reveal the stylistic differences between the hotels: sumptuousness for the Hotel Poupet, sober elegance for others. The interior courtyards, on the other hand, reproduce the motifs of the facades on street. These contrasts illustrate the diversity of rock constructions, from commercial residences to institutional buildings.
