Origin and history
The former Ain Prefecture Hotel, located in Bourg-en-Bresse, is an iconic building built in the 18th century. Originally, it housed the headquarters of the prefecture of the department of Ain, thus playing a central administrative role in the region. Close to the city hall, it illustrates the civil architecture of the period, marked by a desire to represent the local power.
In 1853, faced with the small size of existing premises, the Prefect of Ain decided to build a new building to install departmental services. This project reflects the growing needs of an expanding administration, typical of the 19th century, a period of modernization of public infrastructure in France. Today, the building preserves remarkable elements, such as its street façades and staircase, protected since 1947.
Partially classified as historical monuments by order of 23 June 1947, the prefecture hotel bears witness to the urban and administrative evolution of Bourg-en-Bresse. Although its prefectural functions have evolved, the building now hosts municipal services, perpetuating its anchor in local life. Its architecture and history make it a representative heritage of the institutional heritage of Ain.
