Origin and history

The Hotel de Reboul-Lambert, also known as Hotel de Lagoy or Vermond, is a private hotel located in the heart of the Mazarin district in Aix-en-Provence, between Goyrand and Cardinale streets. Built from 1684, and built in 1700 and 1770, it embodies Aixian civil architecture from the 17th and 18th centuries. Its strategic location places it close to other prestigious hotels such as those of Olivery, Valori and Tressemanes, forming a coherent urban complex.

The hotel was originally built for Henri de Reboul-Lambert, adviser to the Court of Auditors, before passing into the hands of the Count of Castellane Majastre before the French Revolution. In 1812 it was acquired by Louis-Xavier de Meyran, Marquis de Lagoy. Its history reflects the social and political changes in the region, from the Ancien Régime to the 19th century. Ranked a historic monument in 1990, it owes its protection to remarkable elements such as its garden, staircase, interior decorations and fence walls.

From an architectural point of view, the hotel is distinguished by its sober Louis XVI-style facade, decorated with pilasters and stone capitals remaining raw. Its spatial organization follows a classic pattern of Aix hotel: the main entrance to the north, while the garden and the communes, open on Cardinale Street, enjoy a south orientation. This provision illustrates the adaptation of local elites to the urban constraints and aesthetic cannons of the time.

The Mazarin district, in which the hotel is located, is emblematic of the 17th century town planning. Designed as an aristocratic extension of the city, it includes noble residences with harmonized facades, reflecting the cultural and political influence of Aix-en-Provence. The Hotel de Reboul-Lambert, by its location and history, is a representative example, mixing architectural heritage and memory of the families who occupied it.
