Origin and history
The Hotel de Richelieu is an emblematic building of the city of Redon, in Ille-et-Vilaine, Brittany. Built in the 17th century, it embodies the economic boom linked to the Port of Redon, then expanding. This private hotel, located on 3 rue du Plessis, is one of the beautiful houses erected by traders, shipowners and magistrates of the time, reflecting the prosperity of the local maritime trade.
The architecture of the Hotel de Richelieu is marked by a square corner turret in corbellation, whose decor, dating from about 1640, preserves influences of the Renaissance. This architectural detail illustrates the stylistic transition between this period and the seventeenth century. The building has been listed as historic monuments since 18 May 1987, recognizing its heritage value and its role in the urban history of Redon.
The area where the hotel is located has acquired its present shape thanks to the construction of granite docks and cossue residences, symbols of the wealth generated by the harbour activities. Today, the Hotel de Richelieu remains an architectural testimony of this period, although its property is private and its access limited. Its inscription as historical monuments protects its facades and roofs, ensuring the preservation of this heritage.
