Origin and history
The Hotel de Rochambeau, also known as the Hotel d'Asfeld, is a private hotel located at 40 rue du Cherche-Midi in the 6th arrondissement of Paris. This historic building, which has been listed as a historic monument since 1964, is distinguished by its street façade, its posterior façade, its roofs, its stairwell and its wrought iron ramp, elements protected by ministerial decree.
In 1780, the Count of Rochambeau lived there when he received command of the expeditionary corps sent by Louis XVI to support the American insurgents during the War of Independence. This hotel is the place where, on January 7, 1784, the founding assembly of the French section of the Cincinnati Society, a fraternal organization of French and American officers who fought side by side, is held.
The first general assemblies of the Cincinnati were then held in May 1784 in the United States, and then on 4 July 1784 in the mansion of Admiral d'Estaing. The hotel of Rochambeau today preserves commemorative plaques on its façade, recalling its importance in Franco-American relations and in the military history of the eighteenth century.
