Origin and history

The Hôtel de Sallegourde is an emblematic building of Périgueux, located in the heart of the Dordogne department, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. Built around 1475 during the reign of Louis XI, it was the work of Arnaud de Séguy, an influential bourgeois who had served three times as consul of Périgueux. The hotel is distinguished by its strategic location, close to Saint-Front Cathedral, and its architecture combining five-level houses and an octagonal tower with a spiral staircase.

Originally owned by the Séguy family, the hotel later passed into the hands of the Makanan de Sallegourde family. Its history was marked by a partial inscription in the title of historical monuments on 12 January 1931, specifically concerning its tower and turret. In 1984, the building was rehabilitated to accommodate low-cost dwellings, while maintaining its most outstanding architectural features, such as the mâchicoulis and the terrace offering views of the surrounding area.

The architecture of the Hôtel de Sallegourde reflects the characteristics of the 15th century bourgeois houses in Périgord. The octagonal tower, adjacent to the house, houses a spiral staircase leading to a round turret, itself surmounted by a terrace. This configuration, combined with the presence of mâchicoulis, suggests a dual residential and defensive function, typical of the urban buildings of the time. The building, located at 8 rue Aubergerie, is part of the preserved area of downtown Périgueux.

Historical sources mention the hotel in archaeological bulletins from the late 19th century, highlighting its heritage importance. Although partially protected, it illustrates the medieval civil heritage of the region, often overshadowed by religious monuments such as Saint-Front Cathedral. Its rehabilitation in 1984 preserved this heritage while adapting it to contemporary needs.
