Origin and history

The Hotel de Saulx is a mansion located in Beaune, built between the second half of the 15th century and the 16th century. Today, it consists of four housing bodies organized around a trapezoidal courtyard. The oldest part, a corner pavilion probably dating back to the second quarter of the 15th century, has a facade on Place Fleury with stone cross-sections. This pavilion and a stair turret provide distribution between the wings, one of which, on Rue Louis Véry, preserves medieval elements from a second construction campaign at the end of the 15th century.

In the 17th century, the body of houses overlooking Place Fleury was completely rebuilt, and its façade was rebuilt in 1838 for Mr Chabot-Cornu. The stair turret on the courtyard side retains traces of ancient layouts, as a primitive access turned towards a gallery, now disappeared. The coats of arms visible on the turret and a bear-shaped console do not correspond to those of the Saulx family (d This heraldic inconsistency calls into question their exact role in building the monument.

Property of the Lorenchet of Montjamont from 1590, then of the Regnier at the beginning of the eighteenth century, the hotel belonged to M. and Mme Duvergey-Tabourot at the end of the nineteenth century. They donated it to Beaune's hospices in 1919. In the 19th century, residential buildings were added to close the courtyard, probably replacing former commons, reflecting a desire to transform the hotel into a report building. The body of building overlooking Louis-Véry Street has been classified as a historic monument since June 13, 1921.
