Origin and history

Chalabre Town Hall, located in the department of Aude in the Occitanie region, was rebuilt between 1725 and 1732 on its original location. This 2nd quarter of the 18th century building is distinguished by its two-volved parallel staircase, whose wrought iron ramp, with a great finesse, is decorated with geometric and floral motifs. The five crawling panels, the volutes and the cartridges, one of which carries the city's weapons (two jump keys), testify to a remarkable craftsmanship for the time.

The staircase ramp, a protected element, was listed as historical monuments by order of 27 April 1948. The techniques of iron assembly, combining flat clasps, square collars and studs, reveal a mastery of the methods of forging and metal carpentry characteristic of the eighteenth century. The building, owned by the municipality, remains a representative example of Languedoc civil architecture under the Old Regime, combining administrative functionality and careful decoration.

Located at 2 Rue Notre-Dame in Chalabre, the town hall is located in an urban context marked by the communal organization of the time. The monuments of this type were then used as a place of local power, sheltering municipal institutions and symbolizing the city's authority. Their construction or reconstruction, like that of Chalabre, often reflected a desire for modernization or prestige, in a region where agricultural and artisanal activities structured economic life.
