Origin and history

The city hall of Uzès is a civil building built in the 3rd quarter of the 18th century to replace the old town hall destroyed in 1763 by an explosion of barrels of powder, triggered by lightning. The architect Boudon designed the plans of the new building, the construction of which began in 1767 and finished in 1773. To build the northern facade, part of the medieval ramparts were demolished, their foundations serving as the basis for the structure. The south facade, organized around an inner courtyard, features a five-step porch and galleries inspired by cloisters, with arcades on the ground floor and a gallery that is now partially modified.

The northern facade was thoroughly remodeled in 1900, losing part of its original appearance. The building is distinguished by its classical architectural elements, such as the ionic pilasters surrounding the windows or the triangular pediment of the southern facade. Seven ancient steles, discovered on site and classified as historical monuments between 1939 and 1982, testify to the ancient occupation of the site. The Town Hall has been listed as a historic monument since 1983, protecting its facades, roofs and interior galleries.

Located at the corner of Rue du Sénéchal, Place du Duché and Boulevard Charles-Gide, the building embodies both the municipal power and the architectural heritage of Uzès. Its inner courtyard, surrounded by arcade galleries, recalls monastic or palatial influences, while its history reflects urban adaptations after a drama (the explosion of 1763). Today, it remains a symbol of the city's resilience and urban evolution, while sheltering classified ancient remains.
