Origin and history

The town hall of Beauvais-sur-Matha was designed in the current Art Deco, an architectural movement marked by geometric lines and stylized designs. In 1926, the mayor of the commune contacted architect André Guillon to build a new building west of the old town hall, intended to be destroyed. The works, carried out between 1928 and 1930, culminated in a construction whose main façade was distinguished by a base in opus incertum, bandages delimiting elevations, and a large triangular pediment housing the clock and republican motto.

The decoration of the facade incorporates symbolic elements and ornaments typical of Art Deco: carved draperies, bas-relief roses, and stylized plant garlands surrounding the pediment. The axial staircase, punctuated with walls, and the bays with decorated supports reinforce the geometric harmony of the whole. This aesthetic choice reflects the influence of the 1920s decorative arts, while affirming the modernity of the municipality through a functional and representative public building.

Ranked Historic Monument by order of 23 November 2009, the city hall is now fully protected, including its interior and exterior elements (cadastre AB 480). Its location, at 19 Rue de la Chape, makes it a central point of Beauvais-sur-Matha, in the department of Charente-Maritime. The accuracy of its geographical location is estimated to be poor (note 5/10), but its role in local heritage remains important.
