Origin and history

The town hall of Bohain-en-Vermandois, built between 1880 and 1884, is the work of two architects: Pierre Bénard (initial plans) and Joseph Chérier (realization). Inspired by the Flemish style, it reflects the architectural eclecticism of the late 19th century. Its inauguration in 1884 marked a period of prosperity for the city, then dynamic thanks to its textile industry. The building also symbolizes the municipal identity, with a characteristic belfry, typical of the northern communes of France.

During the First World War, the city hall suffered heavy damage: it was burned in 1918 during the German retreat. In 1919, Mayor Paul Challe launched his reconstruction. The destroyed Flemish belfry was replaced by a campanile, while the artist Émile Flamant decorated the wedding hall in 1925. Its allegorical fresco, celebrating the city's renaissance and textile activity, became an emblematic element of the monument. This restoration work, carried out by architect Gustave Malgras between 1922 and 1926, is part of the reconstruction effort of the Hauts-de-France.

Ranked a historic monument in 2007, the city hall owes this protection to the heritage value of its frescoes, including that of Émile Flamant. The building thus illustrates two pivotal periods: the late 19th century, marked by industrialization and the affirmation of the communes, and the interwar period, a period of reconstruction and resilience. Its eclectic architecture and artistic decorations make it a unique testimony to local history, between Flemish heritage and post-conflict modernity.

Today, the city hall remains a central place in Bohain-en-Vermandois, both the seat of municipal institutions and symbol of collective memory. Its location at 2 Rue Fagard, in the department of Aisne, makes it a point of anchoring the heritage of Hauts-de-France. Protected elements, such as frescoes, recall the importance of art in reconstruction, while its campanile evokes the adaptation of architectural traditions to historical constraints.
