Origin and history

The Town Hall of Cachan was built after the administrative separation of Cachan and Arcueil in 1923. Under the leadership of Mayor Léon Eyrolles, the city first used temporary premises before launching the construction of a dedicated building. Architects René Chaussat, Jean-Baptiste Mathon and Joannès Cholet designed a modern reinforced concrete building, covered in yellow bricks, built around an iconic belfry. Its inauguration in 1935 was presided over by Pierre Laval, then Minister of Foreign Affairs, marking its anchor in local and national history.

The protection of the monument came much later, with a decree of 11 March 2002 classifying its facades, roofs, as well as interior spaces such as the large staircase, the festive hall and the council hall. The site also includes an adjoining square, highlighting its integration into the urban landscape of Cachan. Today, it remains a symbol of the public architecture of the 1930s and the municipal autonomy acquired at the beginning of the twentieth century.

Located at 8 rue Camille-Desmoulins, near Raspail Park, the Town Hall embodies both an administrative function and a preserved historical heritage. Its style, combining constructive modernity and brick ornaments, reflects the urbanistic ambitions of the inter-war period in Île-de-France. The duality between its current civic role and its heritage value makes it a central place for residents and visitors.
